A yoga mat isn't necessarily better the thicker it is. An overly thick mat can cause instability, affect balance, lead to incorrect form, and even cause falls and injuries.
Based on the type of exercise, the optimal thickness for floor exercises like aerobics is 6mm-8mm, while a thicker mat for jump rope is 10mm-20mm. Based on yoga practice level, beginners should use 5mm-7mm, while experienced practitioners should use 3mm-5mm. Beginners can start with 6-8mm to protect their joints and gradually transition to thinner mats as their technique improves. Specifically, a 2.5mm mat is lightweight and portable, suitable for outdoor, office, or stacked use; a 3mm mat is typically chosen by experienced practitioners or instructors, and beginners should choose it with caution; 5mm is a general thickness; 6mm is the most common TPE thickness; 8mm is ideal for beginners; 10mm and above are more suitable for fitness training but may affect yoga balance. For gym mats, a 15mm thickness is suitable for high-impact exercises, those with sensitive joints, or those who are overweight, while a 10mm thickness is suitable for those seeking better ground feedback, portability, and low-intensity exercises.
When choosing a yoga mat, you should consider your body shape and level of practice. The larger the yoga mat, the easier it is to perform the movements. It is recommended that the length be at least 15cm longer than your height, and the width be 5-10cm wider than when you are lying flat with your hands and feet naturally placed.
